STARSkate Figure Skating Programs
Welcome to the 2008 – 2009 Winter Season at the Oakville Skating Club! We are offering new sessions and features in our schedule this year and bringing back successful programs from last year.
The first day of skating for the 2008-09 Winter session is September 20, 2008, the last day of skating is MARCH 29, 2009.
The STARSkate Figure Skating Programs:
Skate Canada’s STARSkate Figure Skating consists of a number of tests evaluated in four different disciplines….Free Skate, Dance, Interpretive Skating and Skating Skills. There are 6 different levels of tests in Free Skate and Skating Skills, 7 different levels in Dance and 4 different levels in Interpretive Tests. These tests are evaluated on Oakville Skating Club scheduled Test Days. The tests are evaluated by Skate Canada Evaluators who have been trained and certified through nationally designed courses. Our Test Days are designated by Low and High Test Days. Please consult your coach regarding these test days.
Skaters must enroll in a minimum of two on-ice sessions in order to qualify to take a Skate Canada Test with the Oakville Skating Club. On-ice sessions offered to our StarSkate members are STARSkate I, STARSkate II, STARSkate III, and STARSkate IV sessions where lessons may be taught in all disciplines of figure skating. These sessions include a 10 minute lesson focusing on Creative Basics of figure skating. Creative Basics replace Stroking that was included on sessions in past years. The focus of Creative Basics will be on specific skating basics and may include various teaching aids such as Annie's Edges and the USFSA Moves in the Field. These lessons are designed to promote a succession of skills and development. Dance sessions are specifically designed for dance practice, instruction and partnering.
Our new Enrichment Packages and individual Enrichment sessions are designed to enhance the development of our skaters interested in advancing throught the STARSkate test program as well as competitions. Junior Group Enrichment is available to STARSkate I and STARSkate II level skaters. On-ice sessions are taught in a group lesson format and off-ice sessions focus on many different approaches to fitness such as pilates and various types of dance. Senior Enrichment is available to all STARSkate III and STARSkate IV skaters. There are two types of on-ice Senior Enrichment sessions - Senior Enrichment and Senior Group Enrichment. Senior Enrichment sessions are free skate only, low density sessions. Senior Group Enrichment sessions include instruction in a group lesson format. The two types of off-ice sessions are Fitness and Creative.
Monthly challenges are new this year. Each month a new challenge will be posted for skaters at all levels to work towards. Once accomplished, skaters will demonstrate their new skill to their coach or the Technical Director for recognition. These challenges promote development of the skills required for tests and competitions.
Pre-session warm-ups are expected from skaters at all STARSkate levels. All skaters should warm-up off-ice for 5 to 10 minutes prior to the on-ice portion of their sessions so they will be prepared to start skating and make full use of their on-ice time.
Program Assistants will be required more than ever this year as we continue to expand our Recreational programs. Please remember to hand in your forms. We need your expertise and enthusiasm to make learning fun for our recreational skaters!
Are you a high school student? We welcome your help with any of our competitions, test days and events throughout the year for fulfillment of your mandatory volunteer hours. If you are interested in helping at the Club, please contact the office. There are volunteer forms to download in our forms section.
Please remember contact your coach prior to registering for sessions to verify your coach's availability.
